Reporting a calculation error

These are engineering tools, and a tool that is quietly wrong is worse than no tool at all. If a result looks incorrect, I would genuinely rather hear about it than not — one of the calculators on this site was corrected before publication because a comparison against commercial software disagreed by half a percent.

What makes a report useful The exact inputs you entered, the result the tool gave, the result you expected, and where your expected value came from — a published table, a manufacturer chart, or another piece of software. With those four things a discrepancy can usually be resolved the same day. Without them it's guesswork.

Suggesting a tool

The tools here get built in response to questions that keep coming up in practice. If something in building science keeps costing you time and there's no decent calculator for it, that's exactly the kind of suggestion worth sending.

Useful to include: what you'd enter, what you'd want out, and what you currently do instead.

What I can't do by email

To be straightforward about the limits:

I can't design your system over email. Reviewing a specific project properly means engaging the practice, because it requires a load calculation, the actual drawings, and professional responsibility for the outcome.
I can't tell you whether your contractor is right. Not without seeing the building — and a second opinion on a specific system is a service, not a favour.
I can't stamp anything for a jurisdiction I'm not licensed in. The practice is Florida-based.

Questions about how a tool works, what a term means, or why a calculator does something a particular way — those are always welcome and are usually quick.

Response time

This site is run alongside a working engineering practice, not instead of one. Calculator feedback gets read but may take several days. Anything sent through the practice is handled on business terms — Monday to Thursday.
